A genomic approach to characterization of the Citrus terpene synthase gene family Genet. Mol. Biol.
Dornelas,Marcelo Carnier; Mazzafera,Paulo.
Terpenes are a very large and structurally diverse group of secondary metabolites which are abundant in many essential oils, resins and floral scents. Additionally, some terpenes have roles as phytoalexins in plant-pathogen relationships, allelopathic inhibitors in plant-plant interactions, or as airborne molecules of plant-herbivore multitrophic signaling. Thus the elucidation of the biochemistry and molecular genetics of terpenoid biosynthesis has paramount importance in any crop species. With this aim, we searched the CitEST database for clusters of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) coding for terpene synthases. Herein is a report on the identification and in silico characterization of 49 putative members of the terpene synthase family in diverse Citrus...

Battermann, Henning W.; Steinmann, Horst-Henning; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Due to new legislation, contractual commitments and societal demands, the need to document production processes has been growing continuously for farmers. This is particularly so with regard to plant protection. In this study, we surveyed how 581 farmers from Lower Saxony meet the documentation requirements. Almost all farmers surveyed document their plant production including plant protection measures. The most striking differences can be observed with regard to documentation technologies and investments made. Factor and cluster analyses allowed the identification four groups of farmers with different motivations and attitudes towards existing documentation requirements.

Integrated pest management: a global reality? Anais da SEB
Kogan,Marcos; Bajwa,Waheed I..
The expression "Integrated Pest Management" (IPM or MIP in Portuguese) is completing 28 years since it first appeared in press. Since then integrated pest management or integrated pest control has become the paradigm of choice for activities that aim at attenuating the impact of all pests - plant diseases, weeds, and invertebrate or vertebrate animals - in agricultural production, in human and animal health, and in urban or rural structures. Despite the nearly universal acceptance of the concept, its practical application still is rather restricted, varying considerably among geopolitical regions, the nature of the crop, and, mainly, with the commitment and support of responsible governmental entities for programs dedicated to promote adoption of IPM. An...

Interoperability of Knowledge Units in Plant Protection: Case Studies AgEcon
Berankova, Martina; Houska, Milan; Kvasnicka, Roman.
In this work, we provide two case studies on interoperability and transfer of knowledge in the environment of a company dealing with plant protection. We find that the area of plant protection is highly oriented on working with knowledge. In this case interoperability of knowledge can play an important role in acquiring knowledge from different environments to solve specific problem in companies dealing with plant protection. Nevertheless, the concept of interoperability is well-developed on the level of data and information only. We stem from our previous works, where we defined a logical concept for the interoperability of knowledge on the level of knowledge units. The objective of this work is to show how to apply our process model of knowledge...

Locust Control in Transition: The Loss and Reinvention of Collective Action in Post-Soviet Kazakhstan Ecology and Society
Toleubayev, Kazbek; Wageningen University, The Netherlands; Kazbek.Toleubayev@wur.nl; Jansen, Kees; Wageningen University, The Netherlands; Kees.Jansen@wur.nl; van Huis, Arnold; Wageningen University, The Netherlands; Arnold.vanHuis@wur.nl.
The inability to organize collective action for pest control can lead to severe problems. This paper focuses on the locust management system in Kazakhstan since the formation of the Soviet State. During the Transition Period after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Plant Protection Service disintegrated. The principles of central planning were replaced with individualistic approaches with little state involvement in pest control activities or pesticide regulation. The financial and ideological reasons for dismantling the existing pest control system did not recognize the potential impact that policy-induced changes in agro-ecological conditions and control practices would have on pest development. Nature hit back at the induced institutional change that...

Occurrence and structure of extrafloral nectariesin Pterodon pubescens Benth. and Pterodon polygalaeflorus Benth. PAB
Paiva,Élder Antônio Sousa e; Morais,Helena Castanheira de; Isaias,Rosy Mary dos Santos; Rocha,Dulce Maria Sucena da; Oliveira,Paulo Eugênio.
Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) are structurally variable and widely spread among the angiosperms. The occurrence of EFNs in leaves of Pterodon polygalaeflorus Benth. and Pterodon pubescens Benth. (Fabaceae: Papilionoideae) were detected in adult specimens, at the time of production of new buds and flowers. The goals of the present study are to register the occurrence of the EFNs in P. pubescens and P. polygalaeflorus, and provide comparative data on the anatomical structures. The EFNs occur in the rachis and are located under the insertion of each petiolule. Each nectary consists of a small elevation whose apical portion is deeply invaginated, resulting in a depression (secretory pole), a common characteristic of both species. Unicellular, nonglandular...

Quarantine facilities and legal issues of the use of biocontrol agents in Brazil PAB
Sá,Luiz Alexandre Nogueira de; Pessoa,Maria Conceição Peres Young; Moraes,Gilberto José de; Marinho-Prado,Jeanne Scardini; Prado,Simone de Souza; Vasconcelos,Rosa Miriam de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to address the classical biological control of pests in Brazil, regarding procedures to import and export native biological material. A brief introduction will be given on the current legal issues on the use of biocontrol agents, as well as some considerations on the existing quarantine pests and actions already carried out in the country. The safety in the introduction of exotic organisms is important for Brazilian phytosanitary defense and for a higher adoption of classical biocontrol, making it available for integrated pest management (IPM). Legal and normative aspects establish the procedures that must to be adopted, not only to protect bioprospecting and native organisms, but also to minimize risks to the...

Summary for policymakers of the scientific review of the impact of climate change on plant pests: a global challenge to prevent and mitigate plant pest risks in agriculture, forestry and ecosystems. Infoteca-e
GULLINO, M. L.; ALBAJES, R.; AL JBOORY, I.; ANGELOTTI, F.; CHAKRABORTY, S.; GARRETT, K. A.; HURLEY, B. P.; JUROSZEK, P.; MAKKOUK, K.; PAN, X.; STEPHENSON, T..
Climate change represents an unprecedented challenge to the world?s biosphere and to the global community. It also represents a unique challenge for plant health. Human activities and increased market globalization, coupled with rising temperatures, has led to a situation that is favourable to pest movement and establishment. This summary for policy makers drawn from the FAO scientific review on the impact of climate change on plant pests, and by extension, on plant health provides concrete recommendations for decision makers on how to address the impact of climate change on plant health. The evidence assessed strongly indicates that climate change has already expanded some pests? host range and geographical distribution, and may further increase the risk...

Use of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices as biological control agent of the nematode Nacobbus aberrans parasitizing tomato BABT
Marro,Nicolás; Lax,Paola; Cabello,Marta; Doucet,Marcelo Edmundo; Becerra,Alejandra Gabriela.
The plant-parasitic nematode Nacobbus aberrans is an endoparasite that induces gall formation in the roots and causes severe losses to diverse crops. Some populations of this nematode show preference for certain hosts, revealing the existence of "races/groups" with different behaviour and making nematode management difficult. A possible biological control alternative to reduce the damage caused by this species may be the use of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). In the present work, the effect of Glomus intraradices on tomato plants inoculated with the nematode at transplanting and three weeks later was tested. At 60 days, the following parameters were estimated: percentage of AMF colonization, root and aerial dry weight, number of galls and egg masses,...
